I've been juggling several ideas around of how to ensure combat maintains a sense of balance and inhibit the likelihood of a person resorting to god-modding.
I'm considering implementing stats, but I fear that would remove a lot of creativity from combat scenarios. The solution to this, in my opinion, would be to use the stats as an approximation of a person's potential in any given stat, and I'm believing this may be the best way to go about it, though I'm still very undecided as to the whole idea.
In my mind, the benefits of including stats would be the following;
A person would actually be able to maintain a sense of training and progression, outside of items and boons and what have you. I believe this sense of forward movement may be a neat thing to have.
They would allow an approximation of a person's skills, so whereas if two people had 9 and 11 in their strength stat, you'd be aware it would be a relatively even bout of strength, as compared to two with 3 and 20.
The problems lie in;
The updating of the profile. Not only does this sort of detract from the whole role-play aspect, but it either forces the mods to remain busy or puts the burden upon the player, who then has to be trusted to accurately maintain said stats.
The visibility; this could be nulled by hosting the stats in a person's signature or mini-profile.
Implementation may not only be unbalancing to potential future new members, but may remove the fluidity of certain RPs.
Anyway, I'd love to hear outside thoughts on the matter.
The stats I would consider implementing would be more broad strokes, such as;
Strength, Stamina, and Speed.
Each person would receive a certain amount of (say, 10) stat points to be introduced into the stats of their choosing. Stats would be able to be both benefited and hampered through in-game training and performances, too.
I'd want to avoid the broader and more ludicrous sorts of stats, such as intelligence and instead include things that are more subjective and less evident through words alone.
Just a brief thought. Hoping to hear yours on the idea. If you support the movement, which stats do you believe should be incorporated?
